Brief Biography

His Father Late Profulla Kr. Mukherjee was a Tea Planter and Industrialist. P.K. Mukherjee was founder Managing Director of one Jute Mill and three Tea Estates all located in East Bengal. He had two spacious buildings in Comilla which were used as business head quarters. P.K. Mukherjee used to spend large sums of money for Independence movement. All National leaders who ever visited Comilla used to be their guest.

Being in so close proximity of Independence movements he was more engaged in such activities than study. However, his father managed to keep him out of jail except on one occasion when he had to spend few nights under British police custody. But he never failed in any examinations.

On the day of Partition he came to Calcutta with Rs.5, 000/= and on 21st. November 1947 incorporated a private limited company now known as Metroark Ltd. with paid-up capital of Rs.15, 000/=.

He was regularly reading foreign technical journals to gather information about the latest developments in chemical industries. From these journals he first came to know about the multifarious commercial uses of Silicones. In those days, no technical book on Silicone was available and only two manufacturers in U.S.A manufactured Silicone. Based on his knowledge on commercial application of Silicones, Metroark started introduction of Silicones in India by importing it. While importing Silicones he could get more manufacturer's technical literature and their product information. Also with available Silicones he started research work for possible manufacture of different useful Silicone products. Then only few Silicones were imported for manufacture of different Silicone products for catering a large number of industrial requirements. So Metroark became the First In Silicones in India.

He was a staunch nationalist at heart and strongly believed in self-reliance in high technology. To this end during 1959 land was purchased in Thakurpukur, Behala, where a laboratory was established and some pilot plants were also installed for research and small-scale production. By end 1960, with his know-how and technology Metroark started manufacture of Silicone release emulsions and compounds for industrial uses. He developed many Silicone Products from imported Siloxane intermediates

Within 1972 with very hard labour he could develop the know-how and install plants for manufacture of Siloxane intermediates and Silicone resins and varnishes. Making Metroark the only manufacturer of these Silicones in India. So India became the third country in the world after U.S.A. and U.S.S.R. where Silicones were manufactured with indigenous know-how and technology.

In early 1999 in the face of rapid liberalization in India's policy on foreign capital investments, Metroark decided to go for transnational alliance and joint venture. To this end was formed "Wacker Metroark Chemicals Private Limited". A joint venture with Wacker-Chemie of Munich, Germany, a global silicon giant.

The German principal, Wacker-Chemie who manufacture one-third of the world's hyper-pure silicon wafers for computer chips in addition to the widest range of silicone polymers and a host of other chemicals, have brought in a lot of strategic synergies, especially in raw-material sourcing.

The Joint Venture Company "Wacker Metroark Chemicals Private Limited" (WMC) took up the entire silicone business from where Metroark left off. Under the able leadership of Sri Soumitra Mukherjee his son, and able support from the resident German Executive Nominee, and enhanced vigor of silicone employees who are all transferred to the JV, WMC is consolidating its share in the Indian silicone market and is aggressively pushing its frontiers to the SAARC region and also trying to address demand in the Asia-Pacific region.

Swaraj Ranjan Mukherjee is no more but his vision and dreams live on through the efforts of more than 150 men and women who work, thrive and prosper in the Silicone company that he founded.

Metroark Ltd was incorporated on 21st. November 1947 as a private limited company.Metroark started introduction of Silicones into India initially by importing the same. Gradually research work for manufacture of different useful Silicone products was succesfully taken up. Thus Metroark became the First In Silicones in India.

During 1959 land was purchased in Behala where laboratory was established and some pilot plants were also installed for research and small scale production. By end 1960 with know-how and technology gathered from the research work of Late Mr. Mukherjee, Metroark started manufacture of Silicone release emulsions and compounds for industrial uses. Metroark eventually developed many Silicone Products from imported siloxane intermediates. Within 1972 with very hard labour it was possible to install plants for manufacture of Siloxane intermediates and Silicone resins and varnishes. Even today Metroark is the only manufacturer of these Silicones in India. So India became the third country in the world after U.S.A. and U.S.S.R. where Silicones were manufactured with indigenous know-how and technology. In early 1999 in the face of rapid liberalization in India’s policy on foreign capital investments Metroark decided to do business the way the rest of the world does today. Go global through transnational alliances and joint ventures Cross Indian borders and access the world markets.
In February 1999 Metroark launched Wacker Metroark Chemicals (P) Limited A joint venture with Wacker-Chemie, Munich, Germany a global silicon giant.

Wacker-Chemie Manufactures one-third of the world’s hyper-pure silicon wafers for computer chips. Through a joint venture with IBM it is about to introduce the world’s first silicon-carbide hard-disks wth capacities of 50GB/100 GB and upwards.

Wacker Metroark Chemicals (P) Limited controls (30%) the single largest share of the Indian Silicone Market.

Mr. Soumitra Mukherjee, Chairman, Metroark Private Limited is Managing Director of Wacker Metroark Chemicals (P) Limited.

Mr. Avijit Banerjee, Managing Director, Metroark, also sits on the Board of Directors of Wacker Metroark Chemicals (P) Limited.

The Joint Venture Company Wacker Metroark Chemicals (P) Limited (WMC) took up the entire silicone business from where Metroark left off. Under the able leadership of Sri Soumitra Mukherjee and fantastic support from the resident German Executive Director and enhanced vigor of silicone employees who were all transferred to the JV, WMC is strengthening its grip on theIndian silicone market and is aggressively pushing its frontiers to the SAARC region and also addressing considerable demand in the Asia-Pacific region.
The setting up of the Joint Venture and transferring the silicon business to it was by no means a knee-jerk reaction to exigencies. It was the result of a conscious decision by the next generation management, inspired by the leader Soumitra Mukherjee and with the Blessings of Swaraj Ranjan Mukherjee himself, that:-
Metroark would now grow vertically in volume of business handled, as well as, Horizontally across industries. The only agreed principle being To always remain in the frontiers of Technology.
November 24, 1999 marked the end of an era, with the passing away of Sri Swaraj Ranjan Mukherjee.

But the successors pledged to pursue vigorously his ideals of
Strong International Multi-Cultural outlook.
